Anonymous said: Can I just submit texts too?
Yes, you can, if they aren’t private texts, which happened in the past. Basically as long as the area code is there and they sound like http://textsfromlastnight.com/ , I won’t research their origins.
If it’s a repeat for another character or show, I usually do them. For example some of the recent Willow ones, I have done for Faith, Illyria and other characters. If it’s a new published text, it might be queued. If you are requesting something, I’m certain I have done for this particular character in the past, I just delete the submission. This might explain why some submissions won’t go through. If something sounds too perfect for one character, chances are good, that I might already used it and can’t find it in depths of the archive to repost it. Sorry about that.
Anonymous said: Your blog has a really horrible problem with slut shaming.
No, it has not.
I usually don’t reblog anon, I prefer to answer questions in private, but this here caught my attention. Because, holy fuck. Slut shaming is an issue I pay close attention to - So I intentionally pass most texts that play into that crap and there are a few problematic ones I genderbend, because they get in fact funny that way. I might give some characters their just deserts, that at times indulge in it in canon - for example Mal and Xander. Or give characters texts with rude shit they could say, because let’s face it these shows aren’t filled with enlightened saints. But there is no way in hell that my verdict for Darla, Inara or Faith expressing their sexuality would be anything other than a resounding ‘Awesome!’
So if you think, I want to shame characters for having casual sex, you’re plain wrong. That is the opposite of my intention for this blog and one of my biggest hang-ups of the early Whedonverse, that sex equals bad. ‘Texts from Last Night’ have a certain kind of dirty humor, but all in all they are pretty sex positive. There is no judgment on my part, if female characters muse about their (imaginary) one night stands, just equal opportunity for sex. Sometimes shitty sex, but sex nonetheless.
I’m thinking of doing ‘Best of 2013’ posts over the course of December. The most obvious one would be reblogging theTFLNs with the most notes per month. But I would like to hear additional cool ideas.
So either leave me a message or reply here.
Uhm, what is going on with my queue? Why does it keep posting two posts at the same time, instead of one? What? Why?
Edit#1: Nope, the time stamps in the queue are even correct with hours between posts.
Edit#2: There is cold comfort in the knowledge that I’m not alone in this. Is your queue also over 100? Because this is the only difference I can see between this blog and my other textsfromrandomfandom.
Edit#3: It’s a bug - therefore it should be fixed soon. Hopefully.
Tomorrow I’m off to Denmark for a very long weekend. I’ll be back next Tuesday, so I hope Tumblr won’t fuck up my queue and that everything will run smoothly in my absence. Have fun.
Hijacking this post to answer a question. The numbers are area codes, that say where the text came from. For example, (831) here means this text is from California.
Anonymous said: Can we please not do that thing where we pretend the Avengers is part of Whedonverse just because he directed the movie? That's like adding Toy Story, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and that abomination Alien: Resurrection just because he was tangentially involved.
Sorry, you lost ten to one on that request front. Plus he wrote the screenplay and directed the movie, so clearly he was completely involved in the production process. I watched a five minute Scarlett interview yesterday that mentioned him like twenty times. But if you are worried that this blog will be taken over by The Avengers, I can ease your mind. Just skip over the one post that might contain this movie once a day.
Anonymous said: I really appreciate your blog and what you do, I reblog you quite often. However, I have one comment. Sometimes the context of your screenshot is so far off or the opposite of the text that it loses all meaning. Aren't these supposed to be funny because they're potentially relevant to the whendonverse?
First of all, thanks, I’m glad you enjoy my blog. Second what I learned after a lot of posts is that I most of the time still can’t predict what tfln will be considered ‘funny’ by the masses. There are enough tfln that made me laugh out loud, that only got few notes and I still find them hilarious.
The way I go about this blog is, I read the tfln-page and pick the ones that either made me smile or that make me instantly think of a scene or a character. The second ones are easy to make, find a good cap of the character/scene and they’re more or less done. The random funny ones are a bit harder, I try to strike a balance between these fandoms, characters and pairings. I only watched Dollhouse one time mostly while reading, so it’s a good fit for anything sex, workplace and memory related, but not a show in which I picked up the finer points. I know Angel and Buffy by heart with plenty of vids to prove it and I did an rewatch of Firefly when I started this blog. None of Whedon’s shows are as good as Lost Girl or Queer as Folk are for straight up canon served promiscuous sex, hard drinking, partying and random hook-ups, hence why I started Texts from Random Fandoms.
But luckily for me there are several kinds of tfln. The canon ones, that really hit the nail of something true and relevant. The fandom ones that expect suspension of belief to a certain degree, but work in a shipper or meta context. Slash pairings were a huge draw for me when I started out in this fandom and Faith/Buffy or Spike/Xander are just obvious examples. The absurd character statements are fun ones for me to make and having an amusing cap to serve the text with is golden. So to retextualize Darla, canon informs what these tfln become, but fandom’s dirty mind gives them life, love and bite. The thing is, I know Buffy only slept with four guys, but it’s more fun to imagine her in a random orgy and not caring one bit about her reputation. I know that Spike and Angel have been intimate only that one time, but this certainly doesn’t stop fandom from pairing them up and producing fics and vids telling me they fucked like animals for decades.
So while my tfln might not be always potentially relevant to the Whedonverse or the characters it inherits, I try to keep them funny and fair and to not let my bias show. Please, just keep in mind that humor is unpredictable, what makes no sense to you might be just what another person is thinking or laughing about. Oh and one more thing, I’m not American or even a native speaker, so there might be from time to time some finer cultural points I miss and not deliberately sabotage.
Has anyone of my followers an idea why queued posts just get pushed back? Did Tumblr roll out changes? And more importantly, did they fix it by now? Because I don’t look forward to resubmit and tag 185 posts.
I have to post this screenshot, because these numbers made me laugh -
